'Frankenstein' Analysis

The image to the left represents the opening credits for 'Frankenstein'
The image is built with different shades of black and grey, this colour scheme introduces the dark theme of the film. The background has a spotlight and monstrous hands, to suggest the theme of isolation and danger, to further this, the sharp claws on the hands introduce the idea of strength within the main character.
The font of the writing is different for each piece of information, creating an impact and the idea that the Lexis in the biggest font is the most important information.

The image to the right depicts a woman and a young boy
The characters are dressed in mourning clothes and exude saddened expressions to suggest the idea of loss and a theme of darkness.
Vulnerability is shown by the character choice; an older woman and a young boy. This is further developed by the fact that the woman is holding the boys hand.

The image to the left is of a skeleton
Skeletons, found primarily in graveyards, represent death and the grim reaper. Horror films use this particular type of iconography to suggest a dark theme.
The skeletons hands are crossed  over a sword and a cloak is wrapped around the figures head and body to hide the skeletal body, this creates a dark and spooky feel and suggests that the figure has power, authority and so, a danger element is added.

The image to the right shows Frankenstein and his companion
The two characters are hidden behind the grave stone that looks like of a prison, this suggest that they are about to commit a crime. This idea of a criminal offence is then continued as we see Frankenstein pushing down his companion, to hide him, thus creating an element of danger and curiosity: why are they hiding? what are the doing?
Frankenstein's companion has flared nostrils, ruffled hair and bulging eyes to reflect the idea of madness; whereas, Frankenstein is well groomed and appears sane.

The image to the left depicts the average 'joe'
The middle aged man shown in the image sports the waist coat, hat and checked shirt of the average low paid worker in 1931.
The character has a shovel propped up against his leg to represent that he's grave digger, a hard worker; however, the disgusted facial expression he has suggests that he does not enjoy his job, this is further suggested when he lights a cigarette and throws the match onto the grave without a second thought, this character has little respect for the dead.

The image to the right depicts two grave robbers
The audience are now aware the the intentions of the two men were to rob the grave. The men are seen to hurriedly run over to the grave and take their jackets off, digging at a frantic pace, but why? We do not know yet what they are looking for, this sparks a curiosity from the audience and adds to the mystery of the film.
Frankenstein is dressed in innocent white colours to suggest that he is a good character, this however, alternates from his jet black hair, moustache and eyes. The Companion however, is dressed all in black to suggest an evil force of darkness.

  1. Some good analysis of how meaning is created in this scene with some good use of media language.
